Moving Day Checklist: What to do After the Movers Arrive

8 weeks before your move

  1. Get Organized.
  2. Start researching reputable movers.
  3. The best way to keep your move on track is to stay prepared, buy a binder or folder to keep all of your moving info in one place.
  4. Identify all of your appointments such as: getting your old utilities turned off and your new utilities turned on scheduling inspections, and enrolling your kids in a new school.
  5. Keep track of furniture measurements. This ensures all of your furniture will fit into your new home.
  6. Start packing your first box. This is for things you won’t be using until after your move, make sure to start with non-essential items.
  7. Create a room-by-room inventory. This will prevent headaches with loss and damages along with helping you know you’ve packed everything.

6 weeks before the move

  1. This is the time to narrow your move down to 2 or 3 moving companies.
  2. Schedule in-home estimates with a reputable moving company.
  3. Continue the packing process. Make sure you are labeling your boxes with what room they go in to.

4 weeks before the move

  3. Arrange for your kids and pets to be taken care of the day of the move.

  5. Make sure you’re keeping on track with packing. You don’t want to be scrambling to finish packing the last few days before your move.

2 weeks before

  2. Work on finishing up the groceries you have and try not to buy too much food that will still be around while you move.
  3. Fill prescriptions and make sure that everyone has packed medications they need in their suitcase.
  4. Withdraw cash to tip the movers and make sure you have enough money on hand for any unexpected expenses.

The week before your move

  1. Start disassembling big furniture items.
  2. Being cleaning empty rooms.
  3. Pack suitcases for everyone in your family. Make a bag with essential items everyone can live out of for a few days after the move.
  4. Collect all keys and garage door openers. You’ll need to hand these over to the real estate agent, new owner, or next tenant when you move out.
  5. Take pictures of your empty home to prove it was in good condition when you move out.
  6. Make a list of all of the things you have left to pack. Make sure you empty out all drawers in dressers.
